Exposed Roof

The project transforms a 1950’s house for a young and growing family by using light and extension of the back facade. Introduced to the south of the property, the extension is a direct response to an existing cramped layout with poor connection to the garden. It was crucial to create a clear sequence of spaces and indulge in as much natural daylight as possible by adding two large roof windows above the extension, allowing for the light to bounce and reflect into the living area.
The existing property, whilst in reasonable structural condition, did not have the desired energy performance. Originally constructed in the 1950s, when there was an urgent need for additional housing after war. While reflecting the architectonic features of the time, the loadbearing double-shell exterior walls were not insulated. Thus all cavities on the rear facade is insulated and sealed with a second layer of insulation from the interior. That ensured to reach a desired thermal resitance for the rear facade.
